Driveway Installation: How Tar and Chip Driveways Are Installed

What is a tar and chip driveway?

A tar and chip driveway, also known as a chip seal or macadam driveway, is a cost-effective alternative to traditional asphalt paving. This type of driveway consists of a layer of hot liquid asphalt that is poured onto a gravel base, followed by a layer of loose stone chips. The surface is then compacted to create a durable and textured finish that is highly resistant to cracking and weathering. Tar and chip driveways are known for their rustic appearance and can provide excellent traction for vehicles, making them a popular choice for rural and suburban settings.

How is a Tar and Chip Surface Made?

The surface consists of a minimum of 3 layers:

• Base layer

• hot tar

• chip

Step 1. Preparation

The driveway needs to be thoroughly cleaned and all moss and algae removed using a power washer. You don't want moss or algae growing underneath the base layer as it may permeate through later on and grow on the top layer of chip.

Step 2. The Base Layer

The installation process starts with a layer of hot liquid asphalt being applied over a base layer, followed by a layer of crushed stone chips.

For the base later we like to use a 3/4-inch limestone product to prep for a tar sprayer. Limestone goes together well and allows us to shape the surface to the required pitch.

The base layer is compacted with a roller to make sure it is solid. One of the worst things for a paved driveway is pooling water. Water must have a way to drain off the driveway therefore getting the right pitch and drainage system in place is essential. With the ever-increasing amounts of rainfall in Ireland this is a consideration to take when getting your driveway done.

Step 3. Tar Spray

The tar sprayer then adds a layer of hot bitumen tar over the limestone base in preparation for the top level of the chip to be applied.

Step 4. Final Chip Layer

The final layer of the chip is applied using either a 10mm or 6mm chip depending on the driveway specifications. Different size chips may be used for different driveways depending on traffic weight and volume. Farm driveways may need an extra base layer or larger chip sizes.

Step 5. Curing the Driveway

The driveway is left to cure for 24 hours before it can receive traffic. This is important so as to not damage or crack the under layer of the driveway.

Yes, chip and tar driveways can indeed have custom styles and chip colours. While this type of driveway is known for its durability and low maintenance, it doesn't mean you have to sacrifice aesthetics. There are various ways to personalize a Tar and Chip driveway, such as choosing different colour combinations, adding decorative borders or concrete kerbs, and incorporating unique textures.
